THIS DAY IN UNO HISTORY, 9-30-75: Bruce Springsteen performs for UNO’s Student Programming Organization at the Civic Auditorium. Enjoy these factoids about Bruce and his visit to UNO!

* Springsteen was anything but the kind of “up-and-coming” artist that typically plays the college circuit. Just weeks after the concert he was on the Oct. 27 cover of both TIME and Newsweek (see those at http://brucespringsteen.net/timeline/1975).

* Springsteen released the classic “Born to Run” one month prior to his Omaha concert.

* The concert originally was slated for Sept. 19 in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom but was moved to Sept. 30 in the Music Hall due to demand.

* Advance tickets to the concert were $4 for general public, $3 for students. Yes, just $3 to see the Boss.

* The concert came the same night as the famous “Thrilla in Manila,” the third and final fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

* Paid attendance was 1,645, topping the 1,450 Springsteen drew in Kansas City a week prior.

* An attendee recalls that “Meeting Across The River” opened the show, and “Backstreets” also was performed. A newspaper review of the show also mentions that “It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City” and “Kitty's Back” were played

* See a Gateway review of the concert at http://bit.ly/2ndtIXT

* SPO lost $1,000 staging the concert.

This Day in UNO History

Founded in 1908, the University of Nebraska at Omaha has evolved from a private, non-denominational religious university (1908-1930) to a municipal university (1930-1968) to a state university (1968-present). Below are monthly links to day-by-day accounts of significant or otherwise interesting events in UNO history.
